Police officer detained over loss of firearm at Kendu Bay station

A police officer has been arrested after being linked to the loss of a firearm at Kendu Bay police station in Karachuonyo constituency.

The officer is being detained at Homa Bay police station after he lost a pistol in his custody.

The officer allegedly lost the gun within 12 hours after he received it from the armory on Saturday evening. The loss of the gun was reported on Sunday morning.

The officer was on duty on Saturday night when the gun allegedly got lost. He was undertaking patrols and surveillance in Kendu Bay town that night.

Homa Bay County DCI officer Abed Kavoo said they arrested the suspect and interrogated him about the matter.

The officer's house is situated 1 kilometer from Kendu Bay police station.

It is reported that the officer lost the pistol when he was sleeping. 

“He told us that he woke up at 4.00 am and went for a short call outside the house. But when he returned to the house a few minutes later, his firearm was missing,” Kavoo said.

The officer reported the matter to Kendu Bay police station on Sunday morning after losing the gun.

“Investigations are ongoing to get back the firearm. The officer is in our custody to divulge more information about the lost gun,” Kavoo said.

On Tuesday, Kavoo asked residents with information on the whereabouts of the gun to report to the station.

Other police officers who were on duty with Chesang will also be questioned.

“We are holding the officer to enable us to get tangible information which can give us crucial leads for recovery of the weapon,” he said.
