JUDGEMENT DAY

In courts today: Ruling on murder of Fonseca to be issued

Wheels of Justice: Court cases lined up for the day

In Summary
  • It has been ten years since Fonseca was found murdered in her Runda residence in Nairobi.
  • Still, in the same court, Judge Korir will deliver her judgment on six people charged with the murder of former MP George Thuo.

Justice Roselyn Korir is expected to pass judgment on 5 people charged with the murder of Venezuelan envoy Olga Fonseca.

It has been ten years since Fonseca was found murdered in her Runda residence in Nairobi.

She was strangled to death on July 26, 2012, less than two weeks after arriving in Kenya to head the diplomatic mission.

Her body was found lying on her bed with a wire cord around her neck, hands and legs on the night of July 26-27, 2012. Next to her body was a pair of pliers.

Evidence on record shows Olga had sex the night she was murdered, but it is not known with whom or whether it was consensual or forced.

She reported to Kenya on July 15 to replace former ambassador Gerardo Carillo Silva, who was facing allegations of sexual harassment by male workers from the embassy residence.

Dwight Sagaray, who was the Venezuelan embassy’s first secretary, was among the first suspects to be arraigned in court over Olga’s death.

He was charged alongside Ahmed Omindo, Alex Sifuna Wanyonyi, Moses Kiprotich Kalya and Kipng'eno Kirui Chelogoi.

Another suspect, Mohamed Ahmed Hassan, was never captured and the trial went on in his absence.

Also, a Meru woman who killed her two-year-old daughter by strangling her and throwing the body in the river because her boyfriend refused to marry her with the child, has been sentenced to three years on probation.

Still, in the same court, Judge Korir will deliver her judgment on six people charged with the murder of former MP George Thuo.

Thuo collapsed and died at a Thika pub on November 17, 2013. The matter just like Olga's has been pending in court for the last 10 years.

Those charged are the proprietor of Porkies Club Paul Wanaina Boiyo alas Sheki and Christopher Lumbazio Andika alias Lumba, DJs Andrew Karanja Wainaina.

Others are Samuel Kuria Ngugi alias Visi, Ms Esther Ndinda Mulinge, a waiter, and club patron Ruth Watahi Irungu alias Atlanta.
