The State Department for Diaspora Affairs is set to receive Joyce Achieng Aoko at Wilson airport today at 8.00 pm for medical treatment.

This follows information from the Kenyan Mission in Rome, on January 11 regarding the plight of Aoko, a Kenyan who was working in Tirana, Albania.

Diaspora Affairs PS Roseline Njogu will be at the airport to receive her.

Aoko will thereafter be taken to Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH) for further treatment.

"The State Department will be at the Airport to offer free counselling to the family members of Aoko before and after her arrival," the ministry said.

According to the ministry, Aoko was brutally attacked by unknown persons at her place of work in August 2022 which led to serious injuries.

The ministry said Aoko was hospitalized for treatment and has been in critical condition.

Adding that she needed specialized neurological care which was not available in Albania.

"While we continue to urge the government of the Republic of Albania to conduct speedy and thorough investigations to bring the perpetrators to book, we found it fit and in Ms Aoko’s best interests, to bring her home to complete her journey of healing among her loved ones," the ministry said.

Following consultations, the ministry decided to facilitate her immediate evacuation from Albania to Kenya.

Aoko will be travelling with her mother alongside the medical team from Albania.
