Over 3,762 cases of GBV were reported in 2022 - lobby

The Center for Rights Education and Awareness (CREAW-Kenya) has said that it received over 3,762 cases of Gender-Based Violence in 2022.

Out of those cases, 2,985 cases of GBV were by women while 777 cases were by men.

The various types of GBV included physical assault, emotional abuse, defilement and rape.

“The highest form of GBV was a denial of resources including financial resources at 68.3 per cent, followed by defilement at 7.9 per cent, emotional abuse at 6.7 per cent, rape at 5.7 per cent and physical assault at 4.5 per cent,” they said.

They said that they were able to provide legal support to 2,157 women and 711 men from the cases they received, supporting 387 of them through their cases virtually.

They assisted over supported 828 women and 66 men with psychosocial support.

“We were able to receive 3,288 calls on our GBV toll-free number 0800-720-186,” they said.

CREAW said they remain committed to ending all forms of violence against women and girls to ensure that they enjoy their full rights and live in dignity in 2023.

“Through our Access to Justice program, we have aimed to increase justice and legal education to women in Kenya through the provision of legal aid in addition to the psychosocial support and GBV response services,” they said.
