Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has slammed Mt Kenya region governors for over-licensing of bars and restaurants in the region.
Speaking during the commissioning of the Affordable Housing Project in Ruiru, Kiambu County, Gachagua said the region is losing an entire generation due to alcoholism.
"Mnaweka kila bar kukua bar and restaurant mkitafuta revenue at the expense of our children, in the process we lose an entire generation," he said
This loosely translates to:" You are licensing every bar and restaurant in order to collect revenue, at the expense of our children, in the process, we lose an entire generation".
Gachagua also appealed to the region's governor to sit down and come up with a solution, saying one big bar is enough.
"Kila pahali ni bar and restaurant, inafunguliwa asubuhi mpaka the following day," he said
(Everywhere in the region has a bar, which is opened in the morning and closed the next day, which shouldn't be the case.
A report by NACADA in 2017 stated that Kiambu county leads in the consumption of alcohol.
The survey report indicated the most affected are aged between 18-65 years.
