Thirty four per cent of Kenyan women have experienced physical violence since the age of 15, the 2022 Kenya Demographic Health Survey has shown.
The annual survey provides up-to-date estimates of socioeconomic, demographic, health and nutrition indicators across the country.
It found that 27 per cent of Kenyan men had experienced physical violence at the same age.
Older women were found to be more prone to physical violence, especially women aged 25 to 49 years.
The percentage of men who had experienced violence seemed to drop as they aged, with younger men being more prone to experiencing violence.
"The prevalence of physical violence among women aged 40 to 49 was 42 per cent while for men in the same age group was 26 per cent," the survey said.
For the age group 30 to 39, the prevalence among women was 4o per cent while among men, it was 25 per cent.
Women aged between 25 and 29 years were 37 per cent more likely to experience physical violence while men in the same age group were 28 per cent more likely.
"Between the ages of 20 to 24, the prevalence of violence among women is 29 per cent while for men, it is 27 per cent," the survey said.
The percentage of women who experienced violence between the ages of 15 to 19 years was 20 while for the young men, it was the highest at 29 per cent.
