At least six people are admitted in various health facilities in Bobasi, Kisii county following an anthrax outbreak.

The outbreak reported on Thursday has seen a surge in animal deaths especially at Sugubo, the epicenter of the epidemic.

Many of whom are ill are said to had feasted meat from the carcass.

Officials said more cows died overnight as the disease continues to ravage the region.

County Agriculture executive Magret Obaga said at least 10 cows were reported dead by Sunday morning increasing the fatalities to 13.

More veterinary officers have since been deployed to the region to carry out a free vaccination campaign to mitigate further deaths.

"We are still monitoring the situation. We have imposed restrictions on animal movements as we roll out the vaccination campaign on Monday," Obaga said.

The executive, however, said primary vaccination was being concentrated around Sugubo, ahead of the official rollout.

The larger rollout of the drive will take place at Nyamache on Monday.

Governor Simba Arati is expected to preside over it.

Residents of Sugubo suspect cross border interactions of the animals at the local market with those from Transmara, has something to do with the outbreak.

One household said their animals were wiped out on Saturday.

Many of those rushed to hospital are said to had feasted meat from the carcass.

They are, however, out of danger according to doctors attending to them.

On Sunday, Obaga cautioned residents against eating uninspected meat.

"We advise residents against consuming any meat from the carcass, if we are to mitigate human casualties," she said.

Bobasi constituency borders Transmara to the West, Nyaribari Masaba and Nyaribari Chache to the East and Bonchari to the North East.

It also annexes some parts of Kisii town suburbs.

Sugubo, the epicenter of the outbreak, lies along the Kisii and Transmara border in Narok county.

Obaga further advised residents to report any incidents of the outbreak as preparations get underway to deal with it.
