Kenyans who are yet to get vaccinated have been urged to present themselves to the nearest designated health facility and get jabbed.

Similarly, those yet to get a booster dose are encouraged to do so amid rising concern of the new wave that is sweeping across China.

This comes even as officials from the World Health Organisation on Friday met high-level officials from China to discuss the current surge in Covid-19 cases and to seek further information on the situation.

Despite vaccination being the only key solution to the virus, Kenyans have remained defiant with the vaccination numbers dropping to as low as 20 per day.

“The national, county governments and all other stakeholders should continue to enhance risk communication and community engagement about Covid-19 and Cholera in order to effect social behavior change,” health CS Susan Wafula said.

“Those with flu-like symptoms should always wear facemasks when in close proximity with other members of the public,” she added.

Data from the Ministry of Health shows that the country has so recorded 342,493 positive cases with 11peope testing positive for the virus on Friday.

The data further shows that the total recoveries stand at 336,680 while fatalities stand at 5,688.

Despite the positivity rate remaining relatively low and no deaths recorded in the past few weeks, experts have warned that the disease is still in our midst, a situation likely to be complicated by the surge in China.

Already countries like the United States, Spain, France, South Korea, India, Italy, Japan and Taiwan have all imposed Covid tests for travellers from China, as they fear a renewed spread of the virus.

And passengers arriving in England from China will have to provide a negative test before they board a flight.

To date, at least 10 million adult population has been fully vaccinated, 2.1 million partially vaccinated, 2.8 million doses administered to teens aged between 12 and 18 years while another 1.8 million boosters doses have been issued.

The WHO now wants China to share information and real-time data on the epidemiological situation including more genetic sequencing data, data on disease impact including hospitalisations, intensive care unit (ICU) admissions and deaths.

It also wants Chinese officials to give updates on vaccinations delivered and vaccination status, especially in vulnerable people and those over 60 years old.

“WHO reiterated the importance of vaccination and boosters to protect against severe disease and death for people at higher risk,” the WHO said in a statement.
