Tala, Branch among 40 digital lenders sanctioned for personal data breach

Office of the Data Protection Commission has sanctioned 40 digital credit providers following complaints from various members of the public in regards to personal data breaches. 

In a statement, the commission said that they have received 1,000 complaints

"As of  September 30, the commission has received 1,030 complaints, the office admitted 555 of the cases including 299 which were  digital lenders." 

The ODPC said that the complaints represent 54 per cent of cases admitted.

Among Digital Credit providers sectioned are; 

Tala, Branch, Zenka and Zash, Kashway, Kash Loan, and Coopesa among others.

The Office of the Data Protection Commission has given them until October 18 to respond.

"During the audit process, DCPs will be required to provide the office with requisite documents by October 18 failer to which they will be deemed to have failed to cooperate which is an offence under section 61 of the Act," the statement read.
