Kiems kits fail in 80 polling stations in Ukambani

Despite the late start, a returning officer in Kibwezi insisted that stations must close at 5pm.

The IEBC Kiems kits fail failed to read fingerprints in many polling stations in Ukambani on Tuesday morning.

In Makueni, 80 polling stations also experienced network failure during the start crucial voting exercise, some officials said.

Some of the stations include Sekeleni, Mukameni, Boma 4 and Yieni polling station in Nguumo wards. Others are Kiambani polling station in Makindu, Kikumini, Mithumoni, Kyeni and Mulala polling in Emali Mulala ward among others.

Chrispus Mukumbu, the presiding officer for Sekeleni Primary School, said they were waiting for the Returning Officer to give them a way forward.

According to the returning officer for Kibwezi West, Githinji Ngomano, the failure was caused by network failure.

Ngomano said they had already communicated with senior IEBC officers to quickly solve the matter.

"After the issue is sorted we hope to extend the hours a bit to replace the lost time to enable Kenyans exercise their democratic voting rights," said Ngomano.

However, he insisted that the Constitution has it that all stations are supposed to be closed at 5pm.

Ngomano urged voters to remain calm as they resolve the matter.
