Kenya has significantly expanded irrigation since 2022 as part of efforts to boost food production and strengthen agricultural output.
Government data shows that 770,000 acres are now under irrigation, with major projects underway in Bura, Galana Kulalu and Bunyala.
In Bura, 2,245 farmers are registered, while the scheme is expected to benefit between 70,000 and 100,000 people directly and indirectly.
Private investors have leased 35,000 acres for rice farming and another 50,000 acres for sugarcane production.
In Bunyala, 3,200 acres are currently under production, while 1,500 acres are under maize cultivation in Galana Kulalu Phase One.
The government also says 300,000 households are benefiting from rice irrigation, with Mwea recording a 59 per cent rise in rice production over the past three years.
