Jamhuri Day marks a defining chapter in Kenya’s path to self-governance and nationhood. “Jamhuri,” the Swahili word for “republic,” reflects the country’s transition from colonial rule to full independence on December 12, 1963 — just six months and 11 days after Madaraka Day.
A year later, on December 12, 1964, Kenya became a republic, with Jomo Kenyatta inaugurated as its first president after previously serving as prime minister of independent Kenya.
His transition from premier to president symbolised Kenya’s consolidation of sovereignty.
This year, the 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations will be held at Nyayo Stadium, highlighting Tourism, Wildlife, and the MICE sector as key pillars of national development.
