International Men’s Day is observed every year on November 19 to raise awareness of issues affecting men and boys globally.

The day focuses on challenges such as mental health struggles, abuse, homelessness, suicide, and societal violence, while also celebrating the positive contributions that men make to families, communities, and nations.

The commemoration is guided by Six Pillars, which include promoting positive male role models, improving gender relations, supporting men’s health and well-being, and fostering a safer, more compassionate world for men and boys.

International Men’s Day was founded in 1999 by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh in Trinidad and Tobago, choosing the date to honour his father’s birthday and highlight the importance of male role models.

While the day recognises men's achievements, it also calls attention to global statistics showing significant health disparities, higher suicide rates among men, and social expectations that can discourage emotional vulnerability and help-seeking.

Advocacy efforts on this day encourage policy change, community support, and conversations that promote healthier and more equitable societies.

At its core, International Men’s Day serves as both a celebration and a reminder: supporting men’s well-being is essential for strong families, thriving communities, and a balanced world.
