The Draft Religious Organisations Policy, 2024, and the accompanying Draft Religious Organisations Bill, 2024, introduce significant proposals aimed at regulating religious institutions and practices.

A core focus is preventing the exploitation of faith for political gain. Key provisions stipulate that a religious institution must not engage in any political activity to acquire power, nor should it organise debates to support a specific political party or candidate. This is designed to maintain a clear separation between the state and religious bodies, ensuring faith is not weaponised for electoral purposes.

The draft law also seeks to safeguard individuals from coercion and harmful practices within religious settings. It clearly states that no one shall be forced to participate in a religious practice that is detrimental to their health, safety, or life.

Furthermore, it prohibits any person from using force, threats, intimidation, fraud, or violence to influence another's belief or disbelief. Similarly, it forbids using such methods to recruit or prevent a member from exiting a religious organisation.

These clauses are critical steps intended to protect the fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals, addressing concerns about dangerous cults and manipulative leaders.
