Container traffic at the Port of Mombasa rose sharply in 2024, growing by 23.5 per cent to reach 2 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), according to data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.
This marks a significant rise from 1.62 million TEUs recorded in 2023 and continues a steady upward trend seen since 2020.
The growth underscores Mombasa’s expanding role as a key gateway for regional trade and shipping.
A TEU is a standard measure used in global shipping to describe the capacity of container ships and terminals, representing the size of a standard 20-foot-long shipping container.
