Global Handwashing Day, celebrated annually on October 15, highlights the life-saving potential of a simple, low-cost habit: washing hands with soap.
First observed in 2008, the day involved over 120 million children in 70+ countries and is organised by the Global Handwashing Partnership to champion global hygiene.
The day encourages people to adopt handwashing as a daily practice, not just a one-off action. Proper handwashing, especially at critical times like before eating and after using the toilet, can significantly reduce the burden of disease.
Consistent handwashing with soap can reduce diarrhoea-related illnesses by up to 30% and also lowers the risk of respiratory infections.
The 2025 theme, "Be a Handwashing Hero," reinforces the personal impact of this habit. Beyond individual action, the day also raises awareness about global gaps in access to safe water and soap, emphasising the need for equitable resources to promote health worldwide.
