The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) reported a sharp increase in revenue from the betting sector during the 2024/2025 financial year. Excise duty on betting services rose to Sh13.233 billion, up from Sh10.598 billion the previous year.
This marked a performance of 117.2% against the target of Ksh 11.288 billion. Betting tax (distinct from excise duty) also exceeded targets: KRA collected Sh5.70 billion against a target of Sh5.495 billion, representing about 103.7% of target, and a 22.0% growth from the prior year.
The rise was largely attributed to system integration efforts, whereby betting firms’ systems were linked in real time with KRA’s systems, enabling more accurate, immediate monitoring of transactions.
Despite broader economic pressures — with Kenya’s GDP growth slowing to 4.7% in 2024 from 5.7% in 2023 — total KRA revenues for the same period rose to Sh2.571 trillion, up by 6.8% year on year.
