
Global data from the AITi Global Social Progress Index shows that cardiovascular diseases were the leading cause of death in 2021, claiming 19.4 million lives worldwide.
Cancers followed with 9.89 million deaths, while Covid-19 accounted for 7.89 million.
Other major killers included chronic respiratory diseases, digestive disorders, and pneumonia.
Preventable causes such as road injuries, malaria, suicide, and HIV/AIDS also contributed significantly to global mortality.
The report notes that estimates vary widely, particularly in countries with weak vital registration systems, underscoring the urgent need for improved health data, preventive measures, and stronger global health systems.
