The United States government entered a partial shutdown on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, after Republicans and Democrats in Congress failed to agree on a new spending plan.
Senate Republicans fell short of the 60 votes needed to pass a temporary stopgap bill to keep the government open until mid-November.
Republicans argued that healthcare benefits are not a priority compared to preventing a shutdown, warning that the healthcare extensions Democrats seek would cost taxpayers more.
Democrats, however, opposed spending cuts to health agencies and demanded guarantees on funding.
Non-essential government employees are now on unpaid leave, the first shutdown since 2018.
