What you need to know about World Alzheimer’s Day

Kenya on Sunday joined the rest of the world in marking World Alzheimer’s Day, an annual event held on September 21 to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

This year’s theme, “Dementia: Reducing Risk, Inspiring Hope,” seeks to highlight prevention, early diagnosis, and the need to fight stigma.

According to the World Health Organisation, more than 55 million people globally live with dementia, with Alzheimer’s accounting for up to 70 percent of cases.

Nearly 10 million new cases are reported every year, a figure expected to rise as populations age.

Experts warn that in countries like Kenya, limited awareness and inadequate healthcare infrastructure make the situation more challenging.
