On September 17, 2025, President Ruto inaugurated the new Mombasa rail service, a Sh6 billion project designed to enhance connectivity between Mombasa Island and the west mainland.

This new service, which cost Sh3.4 billion for the railway line alone, aims to address the persistent "last-mile connectivity" challenges that have plagued the region since the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) began operation in 2017.

Previously, commuters faced significant congestion and high costs, with fares ranging from Sh400 to Sh1,000. The new service promises a more affordable and predictable travel experience, with fares slashed to just Sh50.

With a daily capacity of up to 4,000 passengers, the service makes stops at key locations including Shimanzi, Changamwe West, Changamwe East, Miritini, and Mazeras.

The project is expected to significantly boost Mombasa's role in trade and tourism, offering a faster, safer, and more efficient transportation option.
