Kenya’s fuel consumption patterns have shifted over the past five years, reflecting broader economic and transport dynamics.
In 2025, cumulative petrol and diesel use rose by 9.4 per cent to reach 1.92 million metric tonnes.
Diesel remains the dominant fuel, consistently outpacing petrol across all years. Consumption peaked in 2022, with diesel at 1,350.7 and petrol at 770.5 thousand metric tonnes.
A dip followed in 2023 and 2024, likely influenced by economic pressures and fuel pricing. However, 2025 saw a rebound, with petrol at 728.9 and diesel at 1,192.2 thousand metric tonnes.
The data underscores diesel’s central role in powering transport and industry, while petrol usage reflects private vehicle trends.
