Sepsis, a life-threatening reaction to an infection, is a significant global health threat. It's a condition where the body's immune response to an infection goes into overdrive, damaging its own tissues and organs.
With around 48.9 million cases occurring annually, it's a major concern worldwide.
Approximately 11 million deaths each year are linked to sepsis, making it one of the most frequent causes of death globally—roughly one in five deaths.
Tragically, nearly half of all cases affect children under the age of five. Individuals with weakened immune systems, chronic illnesses, and older adults (especially those over 65) face a higher risk.
Even for those who survive, the battle isn't over, as up to 50% experience lasting physical or psychological effects.
World Sepsis Day is observed every September 13th to raise awareness about this silent killer.
