A survey conducted in Kenya between March 2022 and March 2024 has revealed troubling insights into the locations where police misconduct most frequently occurs.
Based on responses from 2,446 participants, the highest share of reported incidents—33.1% took place in public spaces outside respondents’ neighbourhoods.
Public spaces within neighbourhoods followed closely at 23.9%, indicating that misconduct is prevalent in areas where citizens expect safety and community presence.
11.0% of respondents experienced misconduct within police premises or buildings, raising concerns about abuse within institutions meant to uphold justice.
Additionally, 10.4% reported such experiences within their own homes, suggesting a breach of personal security and privacy.
Private spaces within neighbourhoods accounted for 6.8% of reported cases, while private spaces outside neighbourhoods and government premises each registered 5.1%.
