    Kenya’s expenditure continues to outpace revenue, highlighting a widening fiscal deficit.

    Data from the Treasury shows that in 2021/22, expenditure stood at Sh3.0 trillion against revenue of Sh2.2 trillion.

    The trend persisted in 2022/23 with spending at Sh3.22 trillion and revenue at Sh2.36 trillion.

    In 2023/24, expenditure rose to Sh3.61 trillion compared to Sh2.7 trillion in revenue.

    By 2024/25, the gap remained with expenditure at Sh3.96 trillion against Sh2.92 trillion revenue.

    Consequently, Kenya’s fiscal deficit widened to 5.8 per cent in the year to June, up from the 5.6 per cent gap reported in the previous year.
