A new survey by Twaweza in August 2025 reveals that a significant portion of Kenyans remain dissatisfied with how democracy is functioning in the country.
The findings show that poor governance is the leading concern, cited by 19% of respondents, followed by abductions of government critics (16%) and lack of free expression or leaders not listening (15%).
Other concerns include fake promises by leaders (7%), corruption (4%), tribalism and lack of representation (4%), and limited ability to express dissenting views (3%).
Smaller percentages point to captured democratic institutions, extrajudicial killings, early political campaigning, and leaders disobeying the constitution.
Overall, 52% of respondents said they were completely dissatisfied with the state of democracy.
The results highlight deep public frustration over governance, accountability, and civic freedoms, with many Kenyans feeling that political leadership is failing to uphold democratic ideals and adequately address their needs.
