A majority of Kenyans paid bribes in 2024 because they were directly asked to do so, according to the latest EACC survey.
The National Ethics and Corruption Survey shows that 43.3 per cent of respondents said bribes were demanded, while 23.3 per cent said it was the only way to access the service.
Another 18 per cent paid to avoid delays, and 7.2 per cent did so to avoid trouble with authorities.
A smaller number said they paid because it was expected (3.1 per cent) or volunteered to do so (2.4 per cent). Only 0.2 per cent paid bribes to get a job.
The report was released on August 5, 2025.
