The public sector is facing a payslip crisis, with a significant number of employees taking home less than a third of their gross pay, according to a report from the Auditor General of Kenya, Nancy Gathungu.
The police force is the most affected institution, with 36,600 staff impacted. Other government agencies also face this challenge, including the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) with 1,101 affected staff, the Judiciary with 551, and the National Health Insurance Fund (SHIF/NHIF) with 625.
Smaller institutions like the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) and the National Land Commission (NLC) are also affected, with 21 and 71 employees respectively.
