According to the Kenya Human Rights Commission report released on August 4, 2025, most Kenyans rely on friends and family for financial advice, with 45 per cent doing so in 2021 compared to 35 per cent in 2019.
A growing number also rely on themselves, rising slightly from 40 per cent in 2019 to 43.3 per cent in 2021.
Fewer people get advice from media and advertisements, formal financial institutions, groups or chamas, or other sources.
For example, only 2.9 per cent sought help from formal institutions in 2021 compared to 7 per cent in 2019.
Media sources dropped from 11 per cent to 3.6 per cent during the same period.
