Three United Nations agencies are relocating their headquarters from New York to Nairobi starting in 2026, a strategic move aligned with the UN@80 reform initiative. This relocation aims to decentralise operations from high-cost cities, fostering greater efficiency and establishing a closer presence to the populations served. A key driver for this move is the opportunity to lower operational costs and reduce bureaucracy, ultimately increasing the impact of their work. Kenya offers good logistics, robust financial infrastructure, and regional connectivity, making Nairobi an ideal hub. The city itself is recognised for its inclusivity, resilience, and innovation, all crucial attributes for tackling global challenges. The agencies involved in this significant relocation include UN Women, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
