In Summary

The new IEBC team, chaired by Erastus Ethekon, has its work cut out as the country heads towards the 2027 general elections.

Among its top priorities are conducting 22 pending by-elections and registering new voters.

The Commission must also undertake boundary delimitation in line with Article 89(2) of the Constitution, step up voter education, and procure essential election materials.

These activities are critical to ensuring a free, fair, and credible election.

The vacant positions prompting the by-elections include one Senate seat, six MPs, and 15 MCAs — most due to deaths, nullified results, or Cabinet appointments.

President William Ruto gazetted the appointments of the chairperson and six commissioners on July 10, 2025, following clearance from the High Court.

With time ticking, the Commission is under pressure to deliver on its constitutional mandate and rebuild public confidence.
