President says about 400 Chinese companies have created over 60,000 jobs in Kenya

President William Ruto has said that Chinese companies have over the years played a leading role in the modernisation of Kenya.

Speaking in China during a Kenya-China Investors roundtable meeting, Ruto said it is the same companies that have facilitated Kenya's connectivity and regional integaration efforts.

"Whether you are talking about the SGR, LAPSSET or other infrastructure investments, Chinese companies have played a leading role in Kenya's modernisation, connectivity and regional integration efforts," he said.

The President noted that Chinese companies have invested immensely in critical sectors including energy, construction, manufacturing and telecommunications, in the country.

He said that within a very short time, China has risen rapidly and become Kenya's leading trading partner.

He said from about 400 Chinese companies in Kenya more than 60,000 jobs have been created.

Ruto stated that last year alone, Kenya's exports to China amounted to $233.8 million, while China's exports to Kenya were valued at $3.8 billion.

"I do not think anyone will disagree that trade and investment form the strong foundation of the partnership. 

"Again, as you have been told, 400 Chinese firms have investments in Kenya which have created over 60,000 jobs," the President said.

Ruto commended Chinese companies for introducing advanced technologies and technical expertise in telecommunications, renewable energy and manufacturing.

He said these technologies have enhanced Kenya's overall capacity and promoted increased innovation.

President William Ruto arrived in China on Sunday, where he is leading a high-powered delegation at the Belt and Road Initiative forum.

Ruto is expected to give an address at the summit also attended by other heads of state and representatives from more than 130 countries.

Since his arrival in the Asian country, Ruto has held a series of bilateral engagements as well as investment meetings.

On Monday, he visited the China National Renewable Energy Centre (CNREC). The tour came after the signing of an agreement with China’s Energy International Group.

The signing ceremony was held in Beijing.
