Education CS Ezekiel Machogu wants the government to waive in excess of Sh61 billion owed by public universities to save them from collapse.

In a detailed statement to Parliament on the status of universities and the new funding model, the CS lifted the lid on how the huge debts are threatening to sink the institutions.

The Auditor General has previously declared Kenya's leading institutions of higher learning, including the University of Nairobi, technically insolvent.

UoN and Kenyatta University have previously had their accounts frozen by KRA in a bid to recover billions owed by the institutions in unremitted taxes.
