FALSE: Claims Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has banned miraa are fake

Social media claims indicating that Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has banned miraa in the county are FAKE.


The Murang’a Governor has termed the claim as fake.


The claims emerged on social media on Tuesday sparking massive reactions among Kenyans.

One of the fake claims stated: “Murang'a governor Irungu Kang'ata bans sale of Muguka/miraa in Murang'a county Traders given a 5-day ultimatum to find alternative businesses. Thanks, governor. You're still fighting dynasties. Asante.”

Fact checker has however debunked the claims and established they are fake.

When we reached out to Governor Kang’ata to clarify the claims, he termed the reports as “Fake News”.

He added “We have official county communication channels including our official social media. None has communicated this.”

A scan through Murang’a County official handles both on Twitter and Facebook showed that such a ban had not been imposed.

Also, Kang’ata’ has not posted such a message on his Facebook page and Twitter accounts too.

Similarly, no credible media house has reported on the ban.
