Police have mounted roadblocks at strategic points along Thika road to prevent any possible access to the CBD by protesting Azimio leaders.
Police trucks and water canons have been used to barricade the entry routes at Museum Hill, Ngara andJogoo Road among others points.
Heavily armed GSU officers and rapid deployment units of administration police have also been deployed to conduct security checks at these stations with limited access being granted to private cars after undergoing thorough searches.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga who is accompanied by other Coalition bigwigs was forced to retreat to Nairobi's Eastlands area after earlier attempts to gain entry were thwarted.
His efforts to address supporters at Mlango Kubwa, Mukuru kwa chief and Mathare also failed as police who had kept trailing them lobbed teargas canisters while spraying water at the defiant youth.
"They are cowards, we gave a notice to the police for this demonstration," said Raila.
City residents have also been caught up in the melee as transport remained paralysed for the better part of the day.
Public service vehicles were forced to use alternative routes.
