Azimio leader Raila Odinga has told off Interior CS Kithure Kindiki over his 'threats' on their planned anti-government rallies.
Speaking in Likoni, Mombasa on Sunday, Raila said Kindiki should stop with his threats to the opposition.
"Kuna ule jamaa anaitwa Kindiki ananitisha mimi ati ooh Raila ajihadhari sana ati sheria itachukuliwa. Katika katiba ya Kenya, Waziri hawezi kuamrisha polisi. Polisi wako independent," he said.
This loosely translates to, "There's this guy called Kindiki threatening me that Raila should be careful or he will face the law. In the Constitution, a minister cannot order the police, they are independent."
He went on to say that Kindiki does not know what he can do, adding that while he was fighting for Kenyan democracy, he was still young.
Raila said that because of this, the CS should stop threatening him.
"Mr Kindiki you don't know who I am. When we were fighting for democracy in Kenya, you were still young... stop with the threats."
Raila also called on Mombasa residents to turn up in large numbers for his anti-government rallies.
The government had vowed to unleash “full force” on lawless opposition protesters on the day Azimio leader Raila Odinga declared the official start of countrywide mass action.
Setting the stage for a showdown, President William Ruto’s administration pledged to deal firmly with individuals who try to use freedoms guaranteed in the Constitution to hurt others.
“We have no explanation or apologies to make. Anyone who breaks the law in the pretext of exercising freedoms will be met with the full force of the law,” Interior Cabinet Secretary Kindiki Kithure told the Star.
The Azimio multi-pronged strategy consists of defiance, protests, boycotts and peaceful sit-ins that could involve occupying strategic government offices.
