A 78-year-old man died after jumping from the fifth floor of a building in Spring Valley, Nairobi.

Police said the man died on the spot after the jump from their residential house on Sunday evening.

The family said the man had been under depression. He was alone at the time of the incident.

It is not clear what motivated him to jump off to his death.

He said among others, they are investigating if the incident was a suicide mission, accidental or he was pushed off.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy as part of the probe into the incident.

According to police, cases of suicide are on the rise in the country as they receive up to four such incidents daily.

The World Health Organization says such cases are attributed to joblessness, death, academic failures or pressures, legal difficulties and financial difficulties.

Other reasons are bullying, previous suicide attempts, history of suicide in a family, alcoholism and substance misuse, depression and bipolar disorder.

WHO rates suicide as a serious global public health issue that is among the top 20 leading causes of death worldwide.
