The environmental authority on Wednesday unearthed a syndicate of major suppliers of the banned plastic bags in Eldoret and various parts of the country including Nairobi.

According to Nema the bags are not approved for primary packaging.

Nema said they were able to make the arrest through one of the suspects who was arrested in possession of the bags inside a mini-supermarket.

They said the suspect volunteered to take the officers to the supplier in exchange for his freedom.

Nema said the environmental inspectors and local police laid a dragnet for the suspect.

"The suspect got wind of the plan from sympathetic neighbours where she is believed to have a store," the organisation said.

Nema said some accomplices of the suspects were arrested.

The officers are in pursuit of the supplier.

This comes as Nema conducts a nationwide crackdown of the illegal carrier bags.
