The Mandera assembly health committee is currently assessing private facilities.

The committee says stern action will be taken against those found to be operating illegally.

Chairman Hillow Hassan on Wednesday said they aim to establish whether the facilities have adequate infrastructure, equipment and trained personnel to support an ideal maternal health service.

Hassan spoke to the press in Mandera town after touring some of the facilities.

“We have embarked on this very serious assignment of establishing how many private health facilities are within Mandera town and offering maternity services.

"We want to know whether they meet the standards required to operate and whether those operating are qualified.

"We will then at the end of the exercise prepare a report, which we will table in the house for implementation," he said.

Recently, Governor Ali Roba urged the department of health to work closely with the assembly health committee to crack down on facilities operating illegally.

He said compromising the lives and health of residents will be the last thing his administration will allow.

“I want to appeal to residents to choose carefully the facilities they go to seek services from.

"We would not wish to have a situation where the health and lives of our people are compromised. Let us only have registered facilities operating and attended to by professionals,” Roba said.

So far, only Busle Nursing Home, The Mandera Hospital and Bulla Mpya Nursing Home have been assessed.

Two weeks ago, Governor Roba directed operators of private health facilities to refer all patients with signs of Covid-19 to county hospitals.

Roba said the county health facilities staff have been trained on handling Covid-19 patients and containing the disease.

He warned that stern action would be taken on private health practitioners who delay referring patients with Covid-19 symptoms to county hospitals.

The governor said his administration continues to provide the Covid-19 jab and urged residents to take advantage of the opportunity and avail themselves of inoculation.
