Kenya’s Don Smith only needs to fi nish the Pearl of Africa Uganda
Rally this weekend to seal the 2016 African Rally Championship.
Don’s closest opponent
Muna Singh Jnr, who has an outside chance, will be in Uganda ostensibly to try his luck and
hope the Kenyan stumbles.
Should Don clinch the title, he will become the second Kenyan
in two seasons to do so after Jassi Singh in 2015.
The African Rally title was previously won
by the legendary Shekhar Mehta and David Horsey in the 80s.
Don is among nine foreigners making a record 52 crew registered for the 20th edition
of 2016 Shell V-Power Pearl of Africa Rally.
The event, which is the sixth round, counts
towards both Africa Rally Championship (ARC) and NRC titles and will take place between
Friday and Saturday.
The nine foreigners are led by three drivers—Don in a Subaru Impreza from Kenya who
controls the ARC race and the Zambian duo of Muna Singh Jr (Subaru) and Ismail Shermohamed
in a Ford Fiesta.
The three along with Ugandan Hajji Abdul Ssempebwa (Subaru
N11) are tussling for ARC points.
