Moi University and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology have won the tender to supply laptops to 150 primary schools.
They will have to prove they are capable of furnishing 1.2 million laptops and other devices in the first phase of the Sh17 billion programme.
Partnering with JP SA Couto of Portugal, Moi University will have to demonstrate it can supply the laptops in two of the three lots which covers 26 counties.
JKUAT joins with Brazilian- and Argentine-based Positivo BGH to deliver in a lot covering 21 counties.
On January 8, eight companies submitted bids to supply, instal and commission the Digital Learning Solution — laptops — for the 22,000 public primary schools.
In a statement, the ICT Authority said the winners will demonstrate feasibility of their proposals in the 150 selected schools.
“An evaluation will follow on whether they can be awarded contracts for the full roll-out of the programme across all public primary schools in the country,” ICTA said.
The schools are distributed evenly across the 47 counties with three schools picked and representing an urban, peri-urban and rural school.
An additional nine schools are allotted to Special Education Schools.
The full programme will also ensure teachers are trained to implement lessons using laptops, establish a local assembly for digital devices and related accessories and broadband connectivity.
Digital content is ready with standard one curriculum launched on December 15 by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development.
The roll-out of the programme is expected to deliver 983,271 laptops for children in standard one.
It is expected that 294,981 laptops and 23,951 teacher digital devices will be supplied to schools by July.
Another 10 per cent of the total number of gadgets required will be supplied in September and a similar number in November.
