The United States has strongly condemned reports of mass atrocities committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El Fasher, North Darfur, voicing deep concern over the safety of civilians trapped in the ongoing conflict.

In a statement, the US Department of State said it was gravely concerned for the civilians still inside the city and those fleeing to surrounding areas.

It urged the RSF to immediately halt acts of retribution and ethnically motivated violence, warning that the international community could not allow a repeat of the atrocities witnessed in El Geneina.

“The RSF must stop engaging in retribution and ethnic violence; the tragedy in El Geneina must not be repeated,” the statement read.

The United States reiterated that a military solution to the conflict was not viable, cautioning that any external military support would only prolong the war and deepen the suffering of the Sudanese people.

Instead, Washington called on all parties involved to seek a negotiated resolution.

“The United States urges both parties to pursue a negotiated path to end the suffering of the Sudanese people,” the Department of State said.

The statement reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to working with international and regional partners to help Sudan find a peaceful way forward.

El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, has become the epicentre of intense fighting as clashes between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces continue to escalate.

Humanitarian organizations have warned of catastrophic consequences if the violence persists.

The US statement comes amid mounting global alarm over civilian casualties, mass displacement, and deteriorating humanitarian conditions across Sudan.

Thousands of people have fled El Fasher following reports that the RSF seized control of the city.

The United Nations has warned that families are arriving in desperate condition, recounting harrowing acts of violence.

The city had endured nearly a year and a half under siege before its fall, leaving residents starving, wounded, and cut off from humanitarian aid.

According to the UNHCR, more than 60,000 civilians have fled towards Tawila, about 80 kilometres away, as fear spreads and reports of executions and abuse emerge.

Aid officials estimate that over 150,000 people remain trapped in the city under life-threatening conditions, with shelling and hunger compounding fears of further attacks.

The RSF has been accused of carrying out ethnic killings and widespread abuses as it tightened control over the city.

Survivors reported that armed fighters stormed neighbourhoods, assaulting civilians and executing men suspected of opposing them.

The RSF has denied the allegations, insisting the violence is not ethnically motivated.
