A security advisory warning has been issued in Malawi over potential
unrest ahead of Wednesday’s announcement of election results.
The alert issued by the Lilongwe Security Advisory, cited
unconfirmed reports of groups believed to be preparing rudimentary weapons and
other materials with the intention of engaging in violence.
“We have received unconfirmed reports from some of our staff
on the ground that certain groups from surrounding villages may be preparing
rudimentary weapons and other materials with the intention of engaging in
possible violence during the official election result announcements scheduled
for 14:00 today in City Centre.
“Based on past incidents, there is a credible risk that
demonstrations could escalate rapidly,” the advisory reads.
It advised businesses in and around the City Centre to
consider going into lockdown from early afternoon until the situation
stabilises.
The advisory also cautioned against traveling through or
parking in City Centre from around midday.
The advisory comes even as tension remains high in the country over the recently concluded elections. Privisional results released so far show incumbent Lazarus Chakwera trailing former President Peter Mutharika by a huge margin.
Residents were also urged to avoid Old Town and other areas
that have historically been flashpoints for unrest.
People were further warned not to attempt driving into or
through crowds, as such situations could turn violent rapidly.
For personal safety, staff and residents not involved in
demonstrations were advised to stay indoors, keep communication lines open, and
avoid unnecessary exposure.
“Monitor official advisories and local situation reports for
updates.”
The advisory stressed that the reports remain unconfirmed
but urged both businesses and individuals to take precautions until after the
election results are announced and the situation is deemed safe.
