The President of South West State of Somalia, Abdiaziz Laftagareen, held a high-level meeting with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia, Ambassador James Swan at the Presidential Palace in Baidoa.
The meeting focused on key issues such as strengthening ties between South West State and the United Nations, voter registration processes, and continued support from UN agencies in development and humanitarian sectors.
The UN delegation, which included several diplomats, was on an official visit to the city to discuss ongoing collaboration with the regional administration.
Discussions also covered critical areas including peace and security—particularly the fight against Al-Shabaab—public service delivery, and state-building programs.
President Laftagareen expressed his gratitude to the United Nations for its consistent support of Somalia’s recovery and institution-building efforts.
Ambassador Swan hailed the South West State administration for its active role in promoting peace and stability in the region.
“The partnership between the UN and South West State continues to be vital,” he said.
“We commend the progress made in governance, development, and security.”
President Laftagareen was accompanied by key ministers from his administration, including those responsible for Planning, Interior, Women’s Affairs, Labour, and Social Affairs, reflecting the comprehensive nature of the discussions.
South West is one of four federal member states in southern Somalia, alongside Galmudug, Hirshabelle, and Jubbaland.
Under Laftagareen’s leadership, Baidoa, the capital of South West State has undergone notable transformation, emerging as one of Somalia’s most rapidly developing cities.
Analysts note that the city’s growing stability and development have led to the relocation of several United Nations offices from Mogadishu’s Halane compound to Baidoa, citing improved security and better infrastructure.
