The United States has condemned an alleged attack on Abu Shouk camp for displaced people in El Fasher, North Darfur, in which at least 40 civilians were reportedly killed.

US Senior Advisor for Africa, Massad Boulos, said in a statement that Washington remained concerned about the worsening situation in the region and reports of continued attacks.

He called for unrestricted humanitarian access and the protection of civilians.

The US also urged all parties to the conflict to allow safe passage for those fleeing the violence in Sudan.

“The United States condemns the reported killings of civilians in Abu Shouk camp in El Fasher, North Darfur. We remain deeply alarmed by the deteriorating situation and accounts of violence against civilians in and around El Fasher,” Boulos said.

His remarks followed reports of an attack on the camp that left dozens dead.

According to the Abu Shouk Emergency Response Room, Monday’s assault was carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). A resistance committee in nearby El Fasher, comprising residents and activists, also reported the incident.

El Fasher, which also came under attack, is the last major foothold in Darfur for the army and its allies, who have been fighting the paramilitary RSF in a two-year civil war.

The conflict has triggered a humanitarian crisis, with the UN warning that families trapped in the besieged city face starvation.

Sudanese media reported that the camp was caught in crossfire during the fighting in El Fasher.

An aid group operating inside Abu Shouk, home to at least 200,000 people, said some victims were killed inside their homes while others were shot in public.
