Countries leading in road traffic fatalities in Africa

Most countries in the Region are classified as low-income (22) or lower-middle-income countries (18).

When analysed by income level, the highest road traffic fatality rates are observed in low- and lower-middle-income countries, which account for 91 per cent of all estimated road traffic deaths in the Region.

Low-income countries in the Region have an average fatality rate of 21 per 100,000 population, which is higher than the regional average.

This is according to the Status report on road safety in the WHO African Region 2023.
