The Meru University VC should be replaced following the police killing of its student leader, an official of the Universities Academic Staff Union has said.
Constantine Wasonga, who is
Secretary General, asked Education CS Amina Mohamed to see this done.
Evans Njoroge, the Secretary General of the student union, was allegedly shot in the head by a police officer during riots on Tuesday.
He had been leading learners in a protest against
plans by VC Japheth Magambo to re-open the institution before their grievances are addressed.
Wasonga said: "The police action was cruel, brutal, ruthless, uncivilised, uncouth and quite unprofessional. We want the Education CS to take action and replace the Vice Chancellor with immediate effect."
At a press briefing in Nairobi on Wednesday, he added: "As a union, we will not allow the continued stay of that VC in that university."
Witness accounts indicated Njoroge was chased down a farm by an AP officer who shot him at close range.
Students at the university had been sent home following persistent protests over high school fees and poor learning conditions.
They had been asked to return on Wednesday.
