Wandayi: State keen to expand power access for all Kenyans

Energy and Petroleum CS Opiyo Wandayi has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding access to reliable and affordable electricity for all Kenyans.

The CS noted that the government remains steadfast in powering communities, creating opportunities, and driving inclusive socio-economic development across the country.

CS Wandayi also announced that the government has allocated more than Sh2 billion to upgrade electricity infrastructure across Migori county, with Uriri Subcounty expected to be among the biggest beneficiaries.

He also revealed that the government will soon upgrade the Gogo Hydropower Station in Uriri Subcounty from its current generation capacity of 2 megawatts to 8.6 megawatts for Sh6 billion to improve power supply in the country.

“We have already secured funds for the upgrade of the Gogo Hydropower Plant from our Development Partners, and with the support of President William Ruto and Uriri Member of Parliament Mark Nyamita, the dream will be realised.

On issues of politics, CS Wandayi urged residents of Luo Nyanza to continue supporting President William Ruto, saying the government's development agenda is delivering key infrastructure projects that will improve the livelihoods of the Lake basin region.

On his part, Uriri Member of Parliament (MP) Mark Nyamita, who accompanied the CS during the launch, reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring every household in his constituency has access to electricity.

Nyamita explained that expanding power connectivity in his constituency remains one of his top development priorities, noting that reliable electricity will boost businesses, improve education, enhance security, and create more economic opportunities for residents.

The MP disclosed that the commissioning of the two projects marks another milestone in the government's efforts to achieve universal access to electricity in Migori County through the Last Mile Connectivity Programme.

Wandayi was speaking during the commissioning of the Kenya Power Last Mile Electricity Connectivity Project (LMCP) at Maraga Village in North Kanyamkago Ward and Lower Suka Village in Central Kanyamkago Ward, Uriri Sub County.

Opiyo explained that the event marked an important milestone in connecting more homes, businesses, schools and public institutions to the national grid.
