Two workers killed in Ngara sewer construction collapse

At least two construction workers died, and two others were injured after a mudslide trapped five men at a sewer line construction site in Ngara, Nairobi.

The incident occurred at about 6 p.m. on Thursday in the Tsunami Market area, police said.

Police officers on patrol from Ngara Police Station responded after hearing members of the public shouting for help.

They rushed to the scene and found residents attempting to rescue workers trapped beneath the collapsed earth.

A Nairobi City County Fire Brigade rescue team joined the operation and pulled three people from the debris.

Two of the survivors were given first aid before being taken to Mbagathi Hospital, where they were admitted in stable condition.

A third rescued man, whose identity was not immediately established, fled the scene after being pulled from the rubble.

Two other workers, identified as Augustine Ochieng, 31, and Patrick Nyengenye, described by police as a middle-aged man, were pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, Nairobi police boss Issa Mohamud said.

Crime scene personnel documented and processed the scene before the bodies were moved to the Nairobi Funeral Home awaiting post-mortem examinations.

Police said investigations had been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal collapse.

In a separate incident, police have launched investigations into the killing of an 80-year-old man who was found dead inside his house in Nyandarua North Sub-County.

The victim, identified as Paul Kibuthu Kanyiria, was found on Thursday evening at his home in the Mairoinya area after relatives became concerned when he had not been seen for some time.

Police said the deceased's son asked his nephew to check on the elderly man. The nephew, accompanied by neighbours, went to the house and found him lying unresponsive on the floor with visible head injuries.

Investigators found the body lying face down beside a bed inside the deceased's two-bedroom timber house.

Police said the victim had injuries to the back of the head believed to have been inflicted with a sharp object.

They also noted marks on the neck that they said were consistent with a struggle and suspected he may have been strangled using a cord.

During the examination of the scene, investigators recovered a blood-stained metal rod and a blood-stained sisal string, which police believe could be possible murder weapons.

Crime scene personnel from Nyahururu documented and processed the scene before the body was moved to the Nyahururu County Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Police have launched investigations to establish the motive for the killing and identify those responsible.
