FIDA: Ruling brings Sharon Otieno family closer to justice

The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) has welcomed the High Court's conviction of former Migori Governor Okoth Obado and his two co-accused in the murder of Sharon Otieno, describing the ruling as a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice.

In a statement issued shortly after the judgment Thursday, FIDA-Kenya said the decision marked the culmination of a legal process that had lasted nearly eight years.

"This judgment marks a significant milestone in a case that has spanned nearly eight years and has tested the resilience and patience of Sharon's family as they pursued justice through the courts," the organisation said.

FIDA-Kenya said throughout the lengthy trial, Sharon's family remained steadfast in seeking accountability for her death and that of her unborn child.

The women's rights organisation also commended the High Court for its handling of the case and praised the prosecution for presenting its evidence despite the challenges encountered during the proceedings.

"FIDA-Kenya appreciates the diligence with which the court has handled this complex matter, the efforts of the prosecution in presenting its case, and the commitment of all parties to seeing the judicial process through despite the challenges encountered over the years," the statement said.

The organisation, which acted as watching brief for Sharon's family, also paid tribute to the witnesses who testified during the trial.

"As counsel watching brief for Sharon's family, we acknowledge the courage demonstrated by the witnesses who came forward and the resolve of the family throughout the trial," it said.

While welcoming the convictions, FIDA-Kenya observed that no court decision could undo the loss suffered by Sharon's family.

"While no judgment can restore the life of Sharon and her unborn baby, today's decision represents an important step toward accountability and reinforces public confidence that justice can be achieved through the rule of law," the organisation said.

FIDA-Kenya pledged to continue supporting Sharon's family through the remaining stages of the criminal process, including sentencing and any subsequent legal proceedings.

The organisation said it would issue a more detailed statement after reviewing the court's full judgment.

Justice Cecilia Githua convicted Obado, his former personal assistant Michael Juma Oyamo and former Migori County clerk Casper Ojwang Obiero of Sharon Otieno's murder.

The court ordered the three to remain in custody pending sentencing on August 18, 2026.
